Resumo:

This study aimed to analyze, in rural schools that offer high school in Rio Verde (GO) city, how was the performance of the discipline of Geography in the school year 2014 in relation to the preparation for the exercise of citizenship of students. The work was divided into three chapters. To meet the proposed objectives, a literature review of the concept of citizenship was made. The conception found is that this is the junction of three rights: civil, political and social. The education provided in the rural schools of Rio Verde (GO) city differed from the Education of the Field, which is understood as an alternative defended by social movements to the traditional model, subject to the logic of urban education. The educational perspective found in these schools showed there are no differences between urban and rural education. It was verified with the geography teachers who teach the high school in the rural schools of the municipality what their conceptions and notions of citizenship. In the interviews, all stated that the preparation for citizenship is an essential element of education. However, they didn't make clear a definition for it. It was also performed an analysis of the Geography textbooks used in 2014. It was identified that these materials were the same used in urban schools, however contents present as nation-state, territory, human-nature relationship, contradictions provoked The expansion of capitalism and the Brazilian land structure are important for the acquisition of citizenship, regardless of where the student lives. The teaching of geography in rural schools contributes to the formation of citizenship of students, however, there is no concern in valuing the rural man over the lifestyle linked to the urban and agribusiness.
